World Heritage listed national park Shiretoko, which to the indigenous "Ainu peple" means "where the land ends" can be found on the far eastern side of Hokkaido. An abundance of wildlife and magnificent scenery make this area a must visit for those who share a passion for nature and the outdoors.
Shiretoko Peninsula has been referred to as "The last mysterious area for wild animals" and features the world`s greatest high-density habitats of brown bears. It is in fact the only place in Japan where brown bears can be sighted in the wild. Other wildlife found here includes foxes, squirrels, deer as well as rare wild animals such as fish owls, sables and flying squirrels. Marine life sightings in summer include whales and dolphins which migrate during the spring and summer months.
Popular attractions of Shiretoko Peninsula include: Utoro Hot Spring Resort, Shiretoko Five Lakes, Shiretoko Pass, Kamuiwakka hot spring falls, Seseki Hot Spring (seaside), Oshinkoshin and Furepe Falls.
